HERTU - Our Teaching Unit

The Hopkins Emergency Response Teaching Unit (HERTU) is staffed by students certified as American Red Cross Instructors. HERTU offers training in CPR and certification as a Emergency Medical Responder each semester and over Intersession, following the American Red Cross curriculum for "CPR for the Professional Rescuer" and "Emergency Medical Responder." The combined course is about 60 hours long, and runs for the entire semester or throughout intersession. More information about the course is avaliable here on the course syllabus.

JHU students and incoming freshman interested in taking the Emergency Response course can sign up on the course interest list. Other questions can be directed to the HERTU Instruction Chair Richmond at ic.hertu@gmail.com.

Graduates from the HERTU course are eligible to take a practical "challenge" test for membership into the Hopkins Emergency Response Unit, providing EMS coverage on the JHU Homewood campus.

Students who have already passed the HERTU course may also apply for a position as a teaching assistant.
